My Review: Tyler Perry movies are usually centered around concrete themes & moral messages, and that is one of the reasons why I watch his movies. In Good Deeds, Tyler Perry plays the role of a successful business man who leads a boring and mundane life which gets interrupted by Thandie Newton’s character, a struggling single mother.
The storyline is all fine and dandy but the movie direction was like watching a tv-movie, a cheap quick production. It was long and slow at times and, soon enough, it just became predictable. It wasn’t as interesting as Tyler’s other movies and lacked a comedic element (and originality). One of my favorite Tyler Perry movies is Why Did I Get Married (1&2) because it has a good balance of drama & comedy, where as Good Deeds is only heavy on the drama. Tyler Perry was also very bland in this movie, but, I’m just taking a wild guess here, I think he meant to act very straight and boring to highlight his character. The overall acting by the characters were just not balanced, some were way to dramatic and some rarely changed their facial expressions as if they were just injected with loads of Botox.
Long, boring, and predictable, but I hope what the audience gets out of this is that random acts of kindness go a long way and that we should continue spreading ‘good deeds’. 5.5/10
